New York Islanders rookie Matthew Schneider wishes he had another chance at a shot in overtime after losing to the Nashville Predators.

The Predators were holding fort in the NHL’s basement, and Barry Trotz’s roster construction was coming under fire as his high-profile veterans Steven Stamkos, Ryan O’Reilly, Brady Skjei and Jonathan Marchessault, were failing to deliver wins.

Brady Martin, drafted No. 5 overall in 2025 by the Nashville Predators, was injured playing for Canada at the World Junior Championships on Jan. 4.

Stamkos scored his 600th goal in a 4-2 win at the Vegas Golden Knights on New Year’s Eve. It came during one of his best scoring runs with Nashville, getting 10 goals in 10 games. The Predators (19-19-4) went 7-3-0 in the stretch to get back into the playoff hunt in the Western Conference.
