After a wooden bridge burned in 1895, workers built a new granite span anchored deep in the river by Black “sand hogs” laboring in airtight caissons. When it opened in 1908, Hartford celebrated for three days. Renamed for Governor Morgan Bulkeley, the bridge endures as a
