Following the invasion of South Korea on June 25, 1950, the U.S. Army rushed to respond with an ad-hoc unit formed from Soldiers stationed in Japan. Known as Task Force Smith, this unit led by Lieutenant Colonel Charles B. Smith became the first U.S. Army ground force to engage North Korean troops during the Korean War.
